Isaac Babu Kisiang'ani

I am a board-certified specialist psychiatrist with over seven years of cumulative experience in the mental health field, combining extensive clinical practice, health systems leadership, and academic research. I obtained my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Moi University, Kenya, followed by a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Psychiatry from the same institution. I completed four years of structured psychiatric residency training and have practiced as an independent consultant psychiatrist for the past three years. My clinical work is grounded in general adult psychiatry within a high-volume public referral hospital setting in Kenya. This environment has provided me with broad exposure to severe mental illness, substance use disorders, neuropsychiatric conditions, and psychiatric comorbidities in medical and surgical patients. I am particularly experienced in delivering evidence-based, contextually appropriate mental health care in resource-limited settings, while working closely with multidisciplinary teams. Alongside clinical practice, I have a strong interest in mental health research. I have authored and co-authored several publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, with a focus on psychotic symptoms, population mental health, and cross-cultural psychiatry. My research interests include the phenomenology and epidemiology of psychosis, particularly among substance-naïve populations, as well as the integration of mental health services into general healthcare systems. In addition to my clinical and academic roles, I currently serve as the County Director of Health Services and Sanitation for the County Government of Trans Nzoia. In this leadership position, I provide strategic oversight for health service delivery, policy implementation, and health systems strengthening across the county. This role has deepened my understanding of public health governance, health workforce management, and the challenges and opportunities involved in scaling mental health services within devolved health systems.
