About

I am a Board-Certified Consultant Psychiatrist with Substantial Comparability outcome, bringing over 20 years’ experience in psychiatry, including more than 15 years in independent consultant practice across academic, tertiary, and specialist mental health setting. I have held senior clinical, academic, and departmental leadership roles, with responsibility for psychiatric service delivery, clinical governance, postgraduate and undergraduate training within university-affiliated and internationally accredited institutions. My work has consistently focused on enhancing service quality, strengthening workforce capability, and fostering effective multidisciplinary collaboration. My dual postgraduate psychiatry training in Sri Lanka and Australia has equipped me with a broad international perspective and the ability to deliver culturally responsive, high-quality mental health care within complex and high-demand settings. Most recently, I served as Senior Lecturer, and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, while concurrently leading the Professorial Psychiatry Unit at University Hospital KDU (ACHSI-accredited). In these roles, I strengthened clinical governance frameworks, academic standards, and workforce management, while implementing service initiatives that optimized operational efficiency and care outcomes. I have held clinical leadership appointments across high-demand major psychiatric institutions in Sri Lanka, including the National Institute of Mental Health, National Hospital of Sri Lanka, multiple Professorial Psychiatry Units, Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, University Hospital KDU, and several leading private hospitals. Across these settings, I managed complex presentations in acute, inpatient, outpatient, and consultation-liaison services while contributing to the development and expansion of accessible mental health care. My Australian experience as a Principal House Officer within Metro South Mental Health and Addiction Services, Brisbane, strengthened my familiarity with Australian recovery-oriented practice, clinical governance frameworks, risk management, and continuity-of-care pathways within a large metropolitan public health service. I have a strong commitment to medical education, supervision, and mentorship. As a trainer and examiner, I have supported the development of medical students, registrars, and allied health professionals while promoting reflective practice, clinical accountability, and patient-centred care. My approach integrates clinical expertise with quality improvement and collaborative leadership to support safe, effective, and sustainable mental health services. I am confident that my extensive clinical, academic, and leadership experience, together with a comprehensive understanding of Australian mental health systems, positions me to contribute effectively as a Consultant Psychiatrist within your service.
